During Wednesday Academy this fall, the preschool students participated in Bible Telling. In their very first week, they played “Red Light, Green Light” and heard the story of Jesus and the little children from Mark 10. Jesus, they discovered, never tells children “red light.” When the disciples tried to keep the children away from Jesus, he told them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them.” Our CWSCS preschool students learned that Jesus always gives us a green light. He wants them to come to him and to know him, and they have been getting to know him this fall through the stories of Jesus told in the Gospels.
Each week the children begin by hearing the song “Be Still and Know that I am God,” and then they listen to a new story about Jesus that helps them to know God. The goal is for them to hear the story at least three times, so after the first telling, they do several activities that allow them to interact with the story in different ways. Sometimes they learn a song that tells the story or look at an artist’s depiction of it; they often act it out; and they end each session with a craft or coloring page that will help them to tell the story themselves. Through the stories told this fall, they have learned Jesus is our good shepherd who never leaves us; he can tell the wind and waves what to do; he can multiply food to feed many people; he can heal blindness and sickness and injuries; and he can even raise people from the dead. Most of all, they have learned that this powerful Jesus sees all people and loves all people. He loves each and every one of them.
